Presbyterian Parent Cooperative Preschool News

What's Happening at the PPCP:

The month of January flew by so quickly.  We spent the month talking about bears.  The children also brought in stuffed animal bears to share for show and tell, we went on a bear hunt, sang bear songs, and had a hybernation party.  We also had the opportunity to explore and play in different bear habitats such as polar bears with ice, panda bears with real bamboo, and brown bears with caves.

February 2nd to 4th we will read a story about a groundhog finding their shadow.  The children will  bring flashlights and find their shadow as well as make shadows.  We will also listen to a story about 'The Mitten' and learn about 'pairs'. Special guest Benji the Book worm will come and read, sing and play his guitar.  We will also have Show and Tell and Chapel.  The children have been working on a Valentine gift for their parents made out of salt and sand playdough that the children made at school.

February 9th to 11th we will have 2 special guests (Sonni and Tian Tian) this week sharing with us about their culture and the Chinese New Year. Sonnie will also bless us with a couple of songs she will play on the piano.  Benji the Bookworm will come read, sing and play his guitar.  We will also have a small Valentines Party.

February 16th to 18th we will read about President's Day and a couple of books honoring Black History month.  We will have Show and Tell, Chapel and Benji the Bookworm to come read, sing and play his guitar.

February 23rd-25th we will have Show and Tell, Benji the Bookworm read, sing and play his guitar. We will also learn about Opposites.

For science this month we will look at our shadows & also predict and see what happens when you place salt on ice, and what happens when you drop colored water on sugar cubes.

On February 24th please come and join us for our Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser and Silent Auction from 5-7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in the fellowship hall.  We are preselling tickets.  If you are interested in purchasing tickets to help support our preschool please call the school at 353-8325.

Minutes of a Stated Meeting of the Session

February 8, 2010

Organization:  The Session of the First Presbyterian Church, San Marcos, Texas met in a stated meeting at the church on February 8, 2010 at 6:30 pm.  The following members, constituting a quorum, were present: Karen Arledge, Ron Bowden, Fred Clamons, Dave Donnelly, Helen Drew, William Fly, Rachel Fox, Tom Hauser, Deanna Lalich, John Massingill, and Chris Weckerly.  Rev. David Barker was present and served as moderator for the meeting.  Director of Christian Education (DCE) Bridget Maloney was present and Treasurer Donna Nelson attended part of the meeting.

Prayer:  Elder Lalich opened the meeting with prayer.

Treasurer's Report:  The session reviewed the Treasurer's Report with Treasurer Donna Nelson.  Upon motion by Elder Massingill, seconded by Elder Donnelly, the session accepted the Treasurer's report.

Minutes:  The session approved the minutes for its stated meeting on January 11, 2010.

Communications:  Elder Fly reported on communications.

Pastor's Report:  The session received and accepted Rev. Barker's report.

DCE Report:  The session received and accepted DCE Maloney's report.

Clerk's Report:  Elder Fly reported that the church had celebrated the Lord's Supper at each contemporary service since January 11, 2010 and at the traditional service on February 7, 2010.

Diaconate Report:  The session reviewed and accepted the report from the Diaconate.

Ministry Teams:  Administration.  Elder Bowden reported.  The members considered and discussed the team's recommendation for a church policy on solicitations.  After discussion, the session voted to table the matter until the March stated meeting, with suggestions to the Administration Team to revise the policy.

Inviting and Involving.  The members discussed evangelism in the Kyle-Buda areas and suggested placing ads for the church in the yellow pages and newspapers serving these communities, encouraging residents to worship with us.

Old Business:      Time and Talent Sheets.  Session members reported on contacts with church members regarding their time and talents.

New Business:    Guidelines for Church-Related Blogging.  Rev. Barker will check with other churches and their pastors regarding their policies on this topic.  He will report back to the session at its stated meeting in March.

Crop Walk.  The session approved the church's participation in the Crop Walk to be held on February 28, 2010.

2009 Statistical Report.  The members reviewed and approved the 2009 statistical report that Rev. Barker presented for consideration.

Presbytery Meeting.  The session elected Elders Weckerly and Fly as its representatives at the meeting of Mission Presbytery on March 5-6 in Corpus Christi.

Session Retreat.  Rev. Barker asked that the members consider whether to hold a session retreat, and if so, the topics for consideration at the retreat.  This matter will be discussed at the March stated session meeting.

Sabbatical.  Rev. Barker asked that members review policy regarding sabbaticals for pastors and discuss this topic at a future session meeting.

Other Business:  The session approved adding two additional items to the agenda for this meeting:

Certificates of Deposit.  After discussion, the session approved moving funds from money market accounts to certificates of deposit, and authorized Donna Nelson, Carolyn Fielder, Mary Harris, and William Fly to sign such documents as are necessary to effect these transactions.

Capital Campaign Funds.  Elder Lalich noted that Broadway Bank holds a small amount for the church in an account that has been dormant for about four years.  She also noted that the church had taken approximately $135,000 from its Bonner Estate funds to pay off the loan for the purchase of church real estate.  She suggested that the church transfer its capital campaign funds to this dormant account at Broadway Bank and use these funds to repay the amount taken from the Bonner Estate funds held by Texas Presbyterian Foundation.  After discussion, upon motion made seconded, and adopted, the session voted to approve this plan.

Prayer:  There being no further business to come before the session, Elder Lalich closed the meeting with prayer.

Meals on Wheels PDF Print E-mail
Meals on Wheels at First Church: Would you like to get involved in Mission out reach here in San Marcos? This is a simple way to become involved in helping others in our community and all it takes is a little time. There are currently about 25 of us at the church that help out every nine weeks by delivering meals to those who are home bound and don't have a way to get a warm meal at least once a day. You can be a route driver ( there are three each day) or a "runner" ( taking the meals to the door for the driver) one or more days during the week. You can make the call as to how many days you can be involved. If you are interested and /or you have questions please call Chuck Blue at 512.396.1337. We would really like you to join us in this very meaningful opportunity.

A reminder that there is coffee and tea from the Presbyterian Coffee Project for sale in the Fellowship Hall.  Through the project, farmers earn a fair price for their coffee and tea, have access to affordable credit, and invest in their communities.  The cost of the coffee is $6.00 and the tea is $4.00.  There is an envelope at the coffee stand for your money.

The Presbyterian Women Afternoon Circle has adopted a mission project to support the Menaul School in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  The school was begun by a Presbyterian minister in 1896 as a boarding school for Spanish-speaking youth.  The school currently is a day school serving grades 6 - 12. More than 60% of the student body comes from ethnic/racial minority groups.  The school receives some funding through the PC(USA), but most of their support comes from private donations and outside contributions.  Since not all of us are available to go on mission trips or offer our services during the day, here is a project we can all support.  Menaul School accepts and uses Campbell's Soup "Labels for Education" and General Mills "Box Tops for Education" to purchase needed school equipment and teaching aids.  Check the products you buy: Campbell's soups, Select Harvest, Ziploc, Cottonelle, Kleenex, Poise Pads, etc.  Cut out the labels and put them in the container on the table in the Fellowship Hall.
